Fedora 11 KDE Desktop Edition

Hi all fans Fedora KDE fans!
Last time I promised more KDE related blog posts but as you could see - nothing happened. Really sorry, I hope I'll fight my laziness and I'll write more!

Another half year has already passed and we have new brave Leonidas release of Fedora KDE Desktop! The King of Lions will guide you through your new desktop and will lead and guard your computer against all enemies! Viva Leonidas, viva Fedora, viva KDE!

Highlights
So, what's new in Fedora 11 (from KDE point of view)? Fedora KDE Desktop Edition is based on KDE 4.2.3 (with 4.2.4 waiting for updates-testing, expect it soon) and Qt 4.5.0 (4.5.1 in updates-testing). Both were released too late to be included in F11 by default. PolicyKit-KDE is now fully integrated, same for KPackageKit. Fedora 11 features new Leonidas artwork (more later).

Leonidas Artwork
Fedora Design team did again great work (even there were some problems and the artwork creation process has to be changed a lot) and I have to thank Samuele Storari for another great wallpaper.

Splash screen - with wave progress bar (thanks goes to Charlie Brej)

Wallpapers
This release we have even more Leonidas wallpapers - the default one, the default one with King of Lions (leonidas-kde-theme-lion package, not installed by default) and landscape one (leonidas-kde-theme-landscape, again not installed by default).

For more info see Desktop Release Notes.

Final speech
Let me say last two words. Thank you! Yes, thank you - KDE developers, KDE SIG colleagues and especially you - our users! You're our motivation!

Very nice looking! :)

I've been using Leonidas (betas/rcs) on my eeePC for some time now.

It is a good and solid distribution, and Fedora finally started to make good artwork (I don't like the KDM theme, but the rest is awesome)

Congrats to everyone involved in this release.

Hey I'm eagerly awaiting your full critique and ideas for improvement on fedora-design-list!

Mairin: of course, I'll try to summarize it soon, thanks for your work for Design team!

Main problem was - artwork was prepared too late for us. I think first overview of new artwork should be ready in time of feature freeze (as it is feature) and should be shipped in alpha release. As you could see - we've got lot of responses from users - first for landscape, then for lion wallpaper. Another problem is - we depend on artwork style to prepare our KDM theme, splash (that doesn't match with Plymouth as I didn't have time to prepare it)...

Has plymouth based boot been integrated with KDM as well in Fedora 11? Do we get seamless graphical boot to KDE desktop without the annoying flicker when switching to X?

Máirín řekl(a)...

Ah okay, yeh, normally our process would not allow for the artwork to be finalized so late but we made a decision to go with the lion because it was much nicer. It was submitted weeks after the deadline though. Sorry about that :(

Lion theme is indeed much better than landscape one and I'm happy we have really unique artwork in FOSS world! Samuele's work is always great!!! But deadlines are deadlines is we want to deliver Fedora in time. I'll try to summarize my thoughts on design list :D
