Fedora 17 KDE Plasma Workspaces Test Day today!

This blogpost is just a quick reminder for people who knows about our Fedora 17 Plasma Desktop Test Day but also invitation for the "rest" - users, testers and developers - you're welcome to join us ;-)

The main goal is to test Plasma Desktop integration in Fedora but I expect users will be reporting not only Fedora related issues. We will try to redirect these issues upstream but the test day is open for upstream developers too and would be great to have more hands to help.

The main topics are Desktop Effects enabled by default (as upstream already enables it by default, Gnome Shell is also accelerated only desktop and we think it's time give it a chance :) We disabled the initial LLVMpipe software rendering support.), Fedora KDE spin theming support, GDM integration - GDM switched from ConsoleKit to systemd, we have an initial support by Kevin Kofler (to be upstreamed) and hardware integration (Solid, Power management, bluetooth). Also the freeform essential applications testing.

It's held today (2012-04-10) at FreeNode #fedora-test-day channel!

Test Day Wiki with the recommended LiveCD image (with 4.8.2), brief overview and actual test cases and results.

Btw. if you are going to use KVM as found in Fedora 16/17 - change the video options to qlx/spice as cirrus/vnc is currently broken by the cirrus change to 16 bpp - see rhbz#810161.

See you today :)

Fedora 11 KDE Desktop Edition

Hi all fans Fedora KDE fans!
Last time I promised more KDE related blog posts but as you could see - nothing happened. Really sorry, I hope I'll fight my laziness and I'll write more!

Another half year has already passed and we have new brave Leonidas release of Fedora KDE Desktop! The King of Lions will guide you through your new desktop and will lead and guard your computer against all enemies! Viva Leonidas, viva Fedora, viva KDE!

Highlights
So, what's new in Fedora 11 (from KDE point of view)? Fedora KDE Desktop Edition is based on KDE 4.2.3 (with 4.2.4 waiting for updates-testing, expect it soon) and Qt 4.5.0 (4.5.1 in updates-testing). Both were released too late to be included in F11 by default. PolicyKit-KDE is now fully integrated, same for KPackageKit. Fedora 11 features new Leonidas artwork (more later).

Leonidas Artwork
Fedora Design team did again great work (even there were some problems and the artwork creation process has to be changed a lot) and I have to thank Samuele Storari for another great wallpaper.

KDM login

Splash screen - with wave progress bar (thanks goes to Charlie Brej)

Wallpapers
This release we have even more Leonidas wallpapers - the default one, the default one with King of Lions (leonidas-kde-theme-lion package, not installed by default) and landscape one (leonidas-kde-theme-landscape, again not installed by default).

For more info see Desktop Release Notes.

Final speech
Let me say last two words. Thank you! Yes, thank you - KDE developers, KDE SIG colleagues and especially you - our users! You're our motivation!

Fedora 10 KDE Desktop Edition

Well, Fedora 10 finally arrived, successfully landed on the Earth, after half year trip from the outer space of Solar system far, far away and brought KDE 4.1.2 to users ;-)

I don't want to repeat again and again what has been already written about Fedora 10 around web (alien invasion) but I'd like to write some notes about KDE Desktop.

So a few preview bits of new KDE Desktop Edition: (nearly) everything is Solar now! Yes, it's real Solar mania because we like this theme, big thanks goes to Samuele Storari! I really enjoyed working on this theme with all of KDE SIG team members and you can see result in attached screenshots.

Login screen
- KDM theme called Solar Mania

Splash screen - theme called Solar Comet as you can see flashing stars, few small comets flying around and one big showing progress.

And finally Plasma Solar desktop

And what's new?
- KDE 4.1.2 (4.1.3 as 0-day update)
- KDE PIM 4
- KPackageKit
- Gtk styles can be used in Qt
- Panel autohide backport
- etc.

For more see KDE Release Notes.

It's honor and very exciting for me to be part of Fedora community and I'm happy I can help with my small piece to development of Fedora! And I'd like to post shouts on this blog about what's happening in KDE in Fedora, news, changes etc. We want you earthlings to switch to our true Solar KDE religion ;)
